Contraceptive Pills
Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill
The combined pill contains two hormones — oestrogen and progestogen — that prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg.
It’s taken daily and is one of the most popular contraceptive methods.
Who can use it?
Not everyone can take it safely. Your GP or clinician will check your medical history to make sure it’s right for you.
Important: You need to take the pill at the same time each day.
If that might be tricky, a longer-acting method may suit you better.

Progesterone-Only Pill (POP)
Also known as the mini pill, the POP contains just one hormone — progestogen — which makes it suitable for more people and carries fewer risks.
Important: Take it at the same time every day for it to be effective.
If that’s difficult, a longer-acting reversible method might be a better option.
