Understanding STIs: Symptoms, Testing & Treatment

Sexually Transmitted Infections are illnesses you can catch or pass on during sex. The term is often shortened to STI.

It is a myth that only young people get STIs. Anyone can have an STI, no matter their age, gender, or sexuality. This is because you can pass them through most types of sex.

There are ways to lower your risk of catching an STI. These are often simple changes you can make to your sex life. Check out our Safer Sex page to find out more.

STIs don't just affect your genitals. They can affect your whole body. Although some STIs have symptoms you can look out for, many don't. Someone might have an STI and not know. They could pass it on without meaning to.

Luckily, you can get a test for most STIs and you can get treatment for many.

You should take an STI test, if:

  • you have had recent, unprotected sex
  • you are worried that you might have an STI
  • you have symptoms of an STI

Confidential, at home tests are quick and easy to do. You can order a test kit here.

If you don't want to test at home, you can come and see us. Book an appointment or come to one of our walk-in clinics. Our friendly team will be happy to help.
